Benzimidazoles/benzothiazoles were synthesized in water under neutral conditions by the reaction of aromatic aldehydes, o-phenylenediamine/2-amino thiophenol mediated by beta-cyclodextrin in high yields. beta-Cyclodextrin can be recovered and reused without significant loss of activity.
