Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) are excellent magnetic-targeting nanomaterials, which have been greatly developed in recent decades. They have been used in the biomedical field due to their properties of magnetic targeting, small-size effect and biocompatibility. Particularly in pharmaceutics, their applications have become research hotspot. In this review, we have summarized the MIONPs' applications in pharmaceutics such as intelligent targeting drug controlled release systems, special drugs carriers, modulators for lowering multidrug resistance of body and enhancing pharmaceutical synergistic effect, which was used for penetrating into Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) based on domestic and abroad MIONPs research advance. What's more, research progresses of these applications have been elaborated and corresponding advantages and disadvantages have also been discussed appropriately. Finally, the main problems and the future development tendency in the research are pointed out.
