We have realized the superradiant Rayleigh scattering in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate, where the pump laser pulse travels along the long axis. In this incident configuration the spatial asymmetries and the backward scattering pattern are reported. The spatial and temporal evolution of the superradiant process is analyzed by our semiclassical model. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
