The effect of nonmagnetic defects such as vacancies with full termination or hydrogen chemisorption defects on the magnetic properties of graphene is studied. It is found that the local magnetic moment is likely to be induced around defects when the number of defects on one sublattice is different from that on the other sublattice. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
