Tetraethyldibismuthine (Bi2Et4) reacts with elemental chalcogens with insertion into the Bi-Bi bond and formation of bis(diethylbismuthanyl)chalcogenanes ((Et2Bi)(2)E; E = S (1), Se (2), Te (3)). The structures of 1-3 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complexes exclusively adopt syn-anti conformations in the solid state. The molecules show weak intermolecular Bi center dot center dot center dot chalcogen contacts, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional network of corner-shared Bi4E tetrahedra (E = S, Se, Te).
