Nanoscale CdS and Cu2+ doped CdS have been synthesized by using precipitation method and the samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The XRD patterns of pure CdS and Cu2+ doped CdS show cubic and hexagonal structure respectively and average size of the particle is found to be 13.25 nm for CIS and 36.3 nrn for Cu2+ doped CdS. The direct band gap energy of CdS is 3.1 eV and for Cul doped CdS is 2.94 eV observed from the optical absorption spectrum. The doping of Cu2+ in CdS nanostructures improves the optical properties of CdS. (C) 2013 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
