Dark soliton formation and soliton dynamics in all-normal dispersion cavity fiber ring lasers without an anti-saturable absorber in cavity is studied both theoretically and numerically. It is shown that under suitable conditions the dark solitons formed could be described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The dark soliton formation in an all-normal-dispersion cavity erbium-doped fiber ring laser without an anti-saturable absorber in cavity is first experimentally demonstrated. Individual dark solitons are experimentally identified. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is observed. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
