Spectroscopic study of Me4+ ions in SrLaA104 has been performed in the 5-500 K temperature range. The photoluminescence of Me4+ ions around 714 nm originates from the E-2 -> (4)A(2) transition. The energy distance between the E-2 and T-4(2) levels is about 2500 cm(-1). The Mn4+ emission in SrLaAlO4 undergoes rapid thermal quenching already above 250 K that can be caused by intrinsic point defects of the host having energy levels overlapping with the T-4(2) level of Me- ions.
