A cadmium compound, (N-ethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium)(CdI4) (1) with the N-ethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium generated in situ, has been prepared through solvothermal reactions and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is characterized by an isolated (0-D) structure. The cations and anions are interlinked via hydrogen-bonding interactions to yield a two-dimensional (2-D) supramolecular layer. Photoluminescence measurements reveal a wide and intensive emission in the violet region.
