Biotransformation of grandiflorenic acid by permeabilised fungus Fusarium graminearum to yield its hydroxylation derivative, 12 alpha-hydroxygrandiflorenic acid, was studied. The biotransformed product was isolated by column chromatography and its structure was determined by mass spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Grandiflorenic acid was efficiently metabolised by the fungus. After 72h, the substrate was almost completely converted into the product.
