Noble metal nanocrystals with high-energy facets have attracted extensive attention due to their unique properties and potential applications. This review encompasses the most recent progress of both synthesis and applications of noble metal nanocrystals with high-energy facets. First, typical shapes of noble metal nanocrystals with high-energy facets are introduced. Then, the synthesis methods of noble metal nanocrystals enclosed by {1 1 0} and {h k l} high-index facets are presented, with an emphasis of their formation mechanisms. Third, surface-enhanced properties and applications of noble metal nanocrystals with high-energy facets are highlighted. Finally, challenges and opportunities of shape control of noble metal nanocrystals with high-energy facets are presented. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
