Cylindrical and arc-shaped Al2O3-ZrO2 (Y2O3) eutectic ceramic structures without any binders were directly fabricated by laser engineered net shaping from pure powders. During the process, mixed ceramic powders are completely melted at the required position by a high-energy laser beam, yielding fully dense ceramic with fine-grained microstructure in which the eutectic spacing is similar to 100 nm. The average microhardness and fracture toughness of the produced ceramic are 17.15 GPa and 4.79 MPa.m(1/2), respectively. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
