Here we describe the most important preparation strategies and physical and chemical properties of ceria nanoparticles (nanosized ceria, or nanoceria). The main focus of this survey is on the therapeutic potential of nanoceria in age-related pathologies. We also highlight the impacts of nanoceria on living systems, specifically on the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal and other diseases; on the reproductive function of aged mammals; and on the lifespans of cell cultures and organisms.
