Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENSTM) has been used to fabricate dense, net shape melt-cast structures of lead zirconate titanate (PZT), in a single step, directly on a metallic substrate by complete melting and resolidification of PZT powders. From our results, it appears that reasonable dielectric properties can be obtained in LENSTM processed PZT structures without post-fabrication heat treatments. Our results also demonstrate potential application of LENSTM towards direct fabrication of Pit based embedded sensors and transducers on structural components. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
