Herein we immobilized the antibacterial group (quaternary phosphonium salt) onto the chlorinated natural rubber (CNR) matrix to prepare novel polymeric quaternary phosphonium salt bactericides, polymeric triphenyl quaternary phosphonium salt (PTQ1) and polymeric tributyl quaternary phosphonium salt (PTQ2). By contrast, CNR-based polymeric tributyl quaternary ammonium salt (PTQ3) was also prepared. The structural characterizations and thermostability tests were performed, and the results indicated that all the bactericides were successfully prepared and had excellent thermal stabilities especially for PTQ1. All the PTQs bactericides exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The germicidal effects against S. aureus were better than against E. coli. The order of antibacterial activity of antimicrobials appears to be PTQ1 > PTQ2 > PTQ3 > CNR. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
