Novel spear-like Zno nanowires with a length of 2 mu m and a width of 0.26 mu m were synthesized on p-Si (100) substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method without catalysts. The crystal structures and morphographies of the products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and high resolution field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Energy dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDS) demonstrated that the spear-like microstuctures consist of element Zn and O. It indicated that the shapes of the products strongly depend on the growth conditions. The optical properties of spear-like ZnO nanostructures were investigated by temperature-depended photoluminescence (PL) measurements and all of the observed emission lines were well fitted by the Varshni formula.
