Mg-8Li-1Al-1Ce alloy was prepared. And the microstructure of as-cast and extruded specimens was analyzed with OM, SEM and EDX. Results showed that as-cast specimens are composed of a. phase (M(g)), beta phase (Li) and rod-like Al(2)Ce compound. In the extruded specimens, the microstructure is refined and the beta phase has the effect of coordination during deformation. After extruding process, the long rod-like Al(2)Ce compound becomes short rods distributing evenly in the extruding direction. Mechanical properties results showed that the strength and elongation are both improved after extruding deformation. (c) 2007 Elsevier B. V All rights reserved.
