The soundness and robustness of research depend on the quality of data collection. An overview of the important considerations when developing an instrument for data collection is presented in this article. These considerations include theoretical issues fundamental to instrument development, conceptual model development, selection of instrument types, questionnaire design and construction, and establishment of reliability and validity.
