In this paper we report for the first time the use of protic ionic liquids as electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries. The electrolyte 0.5M LiNO3 in PC-PYRNO3 displays good conductivity in wide temperature range and an electrochemical stability large enough to guarantee a safe extraction and insertion of lithium into LFP. When used in combination with LFP electrodes, the use of this electrolyte permits good specific capacity during test carried out at low and high current densities. Moreover, it also shows a good cycling stability at room temperature as well as at low temperature. (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. [DOI: 10.1149/2.027304jes] All rights reserved.
