The spectroscopic properties of Ce3+ activated YBa3B9O18, prepared by a solid-state reaction technique at high temperature, were investigated in the vacuum ultraviolet-ultraviolet range. Though Y-O polyhedra were characterized with regular octahedra in the host YBa3B9O18, five 5d absorption bands were observed due to distorted Ce-O octahedra. The spectroscopic characteristics which include split 5d levels and crystal-field splitting for Ce3+ in the host lattice were interpreted in terms of the crystal structure in combination with centroid shift and spectroscopic polarizability asp. In addition, temperature and concentration dependence of luminescent properties as well as luminescence decay for YBa3B9O18 : Ce3+ was discussed.
