Graphene is a unique type of semiconductor with zero band gap and zero effective masses of charge carriers. Thus, in graphene quantum dots, we, expect many interesting phenomena that are different from those in quantum dots of any other semiconductors. In addition, carbon is an element unique in chemistry and in our society because of well-developed carbon chemistry and the important roles that carbon materials have played in various technologies. In this Perspective, we discuss the recent development and existing challenges regarding colloidal graphene quantum dots. This new quantum-confined system may lead to. novel applications, and meanwhile, it can serve as a model system for understanding complex processes in carbon materials.
