A new nano-sized La(III) compound [La(NO3)(4)(NCS)(H2O)](2)center dot(H(2)bpmp).(H2O) (1) (4-bpmp=N,N'-bis (4-pyridy[methyl)piperazine), was synthesized by a sonochemical method. The nano-sized compound 1 was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. The crystal structure of compound I was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Thermal stability of bulk and nano-sized particles of compound I was studied and compared with each other. La2O2(SO4) nano-particles were obtained by calcinations of nano-sized compound 1 at 700 degrees C under air atmosphere. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
