Silica nano hollow spheres (SNHS) with average diameter of 190 nm have been synthesized, functionalized and utilized to support CdS quantum dots with 1.98 nm in diameters. The obtained nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, BET method, UV-vis and FT-IR spectroscopy. The formation of the hollow nanostructure was explained by a micelle template mechanism and effect of various factors on it was discussed. The growth of quantum dots was followed by UV-vis spectra and noticeable quantum effects of the CdS quantum dots were observed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
