The effective geometry parameter, alpha(g) = n(o)/n(e) is utilized to calculate the order parameter in a number of liquid crystals of different homologous series. The results are compared with those calculated using the standard techniques of molecular polarizability and birefringence. The effective geometry parameter's, alpha(g) influence on the deflection of the light by the liquid crystal compounds is also studied. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
