Nanoengineered capsules hold promise as carriers for optical sensing reagents, providing a wall of separation between the environment and the encapsulated probes, while allowing access to small molecule analytes. Examples of prototype biosensors have demonstrated the potential to stably entrap macromolecular luminescent sensing components within polyelectrolyte microcapsules and observe reversible reactions with target species.
