A series of organic chromophores have been synthesized in order to investigate the benefits of structural versus spectral properties as well as the absorption properties and solar cell performance with unsymmetrically introduced substituents in the chromophore. Exceptionally high open-circuit voltage, V-oc, was found for the symmetrical structurally benefited dye, which also gave the best overall solar cell performance.
