Spectroscopic data on the 3d(1) transition metal activators Ti3+, V4+ and Cr5+ in compounds were collected and analysed in order to obtain an overview on the size of the 3d(1) level crystal field splitting. Results are compared with data on the 5d(1) activators Ce3+ and Eu2+. Trends earlier observed for the 5d(1) lanthanides also apply to the 3d(1) transition metals. They will be interpreted with the point charge electrostatic model and a modified version thereof. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
