In this study, multiple cells of capacitive deionization (CDI) stack were designed in mono-polar and bipolar for a comparison study regarding voltage distribution. The repetitive sorption and regeneration process are conducted to investigate the recycling behavior. Higher removal efficiency is obtained and carbon electrodes are slowly saturated by ions from the CDI stack connected in mono-polar than that in bipolar. Durability of CDI was demonstrated in both bi- and mono-polar systems. Finally, optimized condition of the cell structure and operation design for efficient removal of ions and energy saving are extensively introduced.
