In the presence of saccharide-derived bifunctional amine-thiourea catalysts, the direct aldol condensation of trifluoroacetaldehyde methyl hemiacetal with aromatic ketones proceeds to produce (R)-beta-hydroxy beta-trifluoroalkyl ketones in low to moderate yields with good enantioselectivities.
