In this contribution, heavy-element research at RIKEN, Japan is reviewed. Nuclei of the heaviest elements were produced by the reactions Pb-208(Ni-64, n)(271)Ds, Bi-209(Ni-64, n)(272)Rg, Pb-208(Zn-70, n)(277)Cn, and Bi-209((70)zn, n)(278)113. Alpha decays of those products and their consecutive alpha/spontaneous fission decays were studied using a gas-filled type recoil separator. New nuclei, (278)113, (274)Rg, and (270)Mt, were observed in the Bi-209+Zn-70 reaction. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.
