The article reports on some of the findings of a survey of 105 plants in nine developing countries and across four manufacturing sub-sectors on factors affecting environmentally sound technology adoption. The survey identifies drivers for and barriers to adopting environmentally sound technology as perceived by plant managers and key informants. Not surprisingly, environmental regulation and market pressure appear to exert more influence than community pressure on the adoption of environmentally sound technology. The global generalization, however, masks a number of significant sub-sectoral and country variations as well as the importance of different views held by plant managers and key informants.
