A new Cd(II) complex [Cd(L)(1.5)(NO(3))2](n)center dot 2nCHCl(3) (1) with a semi-rigid 3,3'-bipyridyl ligand [L = N, N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl) pyromellitic diimide], has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. It consists of one-dimensional rod and loop chains featuring the combination of Z(c)-(anti, cis) and Z(t)-(anti, trans) mode conformations for the coordinated ligands. The one-dimensional chains are assembled in parallel and non-parallel directions into three-dimensional networks by complicated supramolecular interactions. The solid photoluminescence of 1 was also investigated at room temperature.
