Freshwater mussel shells from Middle and Late Holocene strata at an archaeological site in Mississippi, U.S.A., are examined for morphological and chemical differences that could be related to changing paleoenvironmental conditions. Although significant differences are noted, the different data sets provide contradictory or unclear results, suggesting that reliance upon single data sets is an unwarranted practice.
