The temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties of efficient red-emitting phosphors NaYTiO4:Pr3+ and NaGdTiO4:Pr3+ are studied. Distinct temperature sensing characteristic of D-1(2) emission is observed. The intensity of D-1(2) emission is almost linearly decreased with the increasing temperature. The quenching process is induced by a low-lying Pr3+-Ti4+ intervalence charge transfer state (IVCT). Because the energies of IVCTs are different for two samples, different temperature sensitive ranges are observed. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
