Ce3+-doped Na2CaMg(PO4)(2) was prepared by high temperature solid-state reaction. The phosphor was confirmed to be pure crystalline phase of Na2CaMg(PO4)(2). The spectroscopic properties of the Ce3+ ions were investigated by vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. The energy transfer from the host to Ce3+ ions was demonstrated. The phosphor could be excited by VUV light and showed a broad purplish blue emission with the maximum wavelength at 385 nm. The five 5d levels corresponding to the 4f(1) -> 4f(0)5d(1) transition of Ce3+ ions were identified. The spectroscopic parameters, e.g., the barycenter, host absorption bands, crystal field splitting and stokes shift were discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
