Solid solution ranges of ZrB2 with other refractory diborides were examined by arc melting, flux and floating zone methods. In the system with HfB2, a perfect solid solution was formed. In the systems with TiB2, NbB2 and TaB2, the lattice constants changed linearly as their contents increased, but X-ray diffraction peaks were observed to be broad due to phase separation. Accordingly, the stable composition ranges were <= 24 mol%, <= 10 mol% and <= 8 mol%, respectively. In the systems with VB2 and CrB2, phases coexisted with the ZrB2 phase and their solubility in the ZrB2 phase was < 3 mol% and < 1 mol%, respectively. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
