Polycrystalline samples of the La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 manganite were prepared by the carbonate precursor method and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect is determined and compared to the similar systems. The magnetocaloric effect in polycrystalline manganite is shifted less than 20 K below that one of the single crystal. The relative cooling power being more than one third of RCP(S) for the magnetocaloric standard of metallic Gd suggests a possible application for magnetic cooling around the room temperature.
