Machining of fibre reinforced plastic is a process that is substantially different from metals. Drilling is one of the long practiced methods for generating holes for riveting and fastening structural assemblies. The size of the delamination zone has been shown to be related to the thrust force developed during drilling and there is a critical thrust force below which no damage occurs. The critical thrust force at the onset of delamination is predicted and compared with the twist drill, core drill and saw drill. Based on the proposed model, an innovative drill can be developed for industry.
