Modelling of impacts on fibre-metal laminates requires understanding the interaction between the composite and metal layers. From the many parameters that affect the laminate response, several sets of assumptions differentiate the large number of models available in the literature. A few computational methods on the impact process are described. The paper focuses on analytical studies involving empirical, structural, and energy approaches. These models are critically reviewed and the scarcity of analytical studies on FMLs is revealed. The importance of the plate deformation during impact loading is emphasised and recommendations are given on the development of a quasi-static energy-balance model integrated into a structural theory. The generic nature of this method allows to understand the impact mechanics of FMLs. Further research is necessary in the assessment of complex structures in realistic conditions.
