Atherosclerosis is now recognized as an inflammatory/immunomodulatory reaction to the presence of oxidized low-density lipoproteins within the arterial wall. often times in the setting of such risk factors as family history. hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure. diabetes mellitus and smoking.
