A novel Mg46Li19Cu25Y10 nanostructure-bcc ductile phase composite containing a Mg2Cu phase and amorphous zones has been obtained. The large plasticity (25%) under compression is due to the soft bcc Mg-Li solid solution phase and the large Mg2Cu phase particles. A three stage serrated flow pattern is observed in the compressive stress-strain curve which is associated to the microcrack development. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
