Nano-scale and single crystals of a new Mn-II complex, {[Mn(pyterpy)(H2O)(NCS)(1.88)Cl-0.12] center dot DMF} (1) [pyterpy = 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine] have been synthesized by the reaction of pyterpy and mixtures of manganese(II) acetate and potassium thiocyanate as well as potassium chloride using sonochemical and heat gradient methods, respectively. The nano-structure was characterized by IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the structure of compound 1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Thermal stability and catalytic properties of nanoparticles and single crystalline samples of compound 1 were studied and are compared with each other. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
