A new pillared cerium(IV) sulfate-diphosphonate with formula Ce-2(2H(2)O)[(O3PCH2)-NC10H18 N-(CH2PO3)(SO4)(2)] center dot 6H(2)O has been hydrothermally synthesized and its structure has been solved ab initio from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data. The luminescent and thermal properties of this compound have been preliminarily studied and the encouraging results place it in the field of functional hybrid materials. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
