Reaction of 2,2',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid (2,4-H(4)bptc), Zn(NO3)(2) center dot 6H(2)O in the presence of NaOH hydrothermally at 180 degrees C affords the first 2,4-H(4)bptc complex [Zn-3(mu(3)-OH)(2)(2,4-bptc)(n) center dot 2nH(2)O (1). Crystal structure indicates that 1 is Zn-2(OH)(2) diamond-core chains linked through 2,2',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylate. I was characterized by TG, IR and fluorescence spectra. 1 is the first example of 2,4-H(4)bptc complex and also first neat Zn-2(OH)(2) diamond-core chains. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
