A sensitive fluorescent chemosensor based on bis-Schiff base N,N'-(1,4-phenylenedimethylidyne) bis-1,4-benzenediamine (PMBA) was developed for detection of Al3+ in aqueous solutions. A naked eye color variation from yellow to colorless is observed along with a remarkable fluorescence enhancement. A good linearity between the fluorescence intensity of the coordinate complex Al3+-PMBA and the concentration of Al3+ (0-30 mu M/L), with a detection limit of 2 x 10(-6) M was established.
