Both prophylactic and acute treatment of hereditary angioedema have been revolutionized in the past decade. Effective prophylactic treatment has long been provided by the group of attenuated androgens and antifibrinolytic agents, but their use has been attended by side effects. Plasma derived Cl inhibitor has been added to the group of agents effective in prophylaxis and a group of agents, discussed elsewhere in this volume, has been added to the armamentarium for acute therapy.
