Two low-complexity data-aided frequency estimators, suitable for use in burst-mode communications, are described and analyzed. The estimators are based on pilot symbols organized into disjoint blocks embedded in the burst. The first estimator is a generalization of the phase increment frequency estimation technique and the second estimator is a generalization of the autocorrelation frequency estimation technique. The generalizations are needed to account for the spacings between the pilot blocks. It is shown that the frequency estimators exhibit good accuracy while maintaining useful operating ranges.
