A mild and efficient procedure for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-(thio)ones in phosphinite ionic liquid is described. This ionic liquid plays a dual role as both the reaction media and also a catalyst, which can be easily recovered and reused in several runs. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
