Poster summary
- Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely studied for their ability to store/release thermal energy in a more efficient way than sensible heat materials. Yet, the deploiement of heat storage systems in the market is still very low, particularly for mid- and high temperature applications. In situ and real time Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) experimentations have been performed in this work to deepen the knowledge related to the thermal behaviours of PCMs, to their reversible solid ⇄ solid and solid ⇄ liquid transitions, and then to their impacts in the synthesis of new advanced materials. The velocities of the phase change propagation fronts for two different nature of PCMs (a fossil-based paraffin and an inorganic salt), at microscale, were calculated by image processing. To this date, these results of utmost importance regarding the final performance of the PCM have never been given in literature.
