Poster summary
- Most of the field crops are sensitive to drought stress. Cerium oxide nanoparticles are widely reported to have antioxidant properties . This study aimed to (i) examine the toxicity effect of cerium nanoparticles on different organisms and (ii) quantify the effect of foliar spray of nanoceria on sorghum under drought stress. Different organisms were exposed to different nanoceria concentrations (0, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 500, and 1000 mg L-1) to quantify their ecotoxicity potential. The result indicated that no toxicity effects were observed up to the concentration of 25 mg L-1. The foliar spray of cerium nanoparticles alleviated the drought stress by improving the photosynthetic rate and seed yield through increased PSII quantum yield, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and accumulation of osmoticum. It can be concluded that nanoceria application can alleviate the effects of drought stress through its antioxidant properties and osmoticum effect.
